Geographical location

Garmisch-Partenkirchen lies in the middle of a wide valley basin, surrounded by the Wetterstein mountains with Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze (2,962 m), and the Ammer and Ester mountains. It is situated 708 m above sea level, 90 km south of Munich and 15 km north of Tyrol.

Our town can look back on over 4000 years of history.

  • 2000 before Christ

    First evidence of colonisation.

  • 15 before Christ

    Roman legions march through the region on their way north.

  • 200 after Christ

    The Via Raetia, a branch of the Via Claudia, the connection between the Roman Empire and Augusta Vindelicorum, runs through Partenkirchen. A fortified road station with the name Partanum is located near today's parish church.

  • 7th century

    Settlement by the Bavarians and foundation of Garmisch (first documented as Germareskaue in 802).

  • 12th century

    First documented mention of Partenkirchen (Barthinkirchen).

  • 13th century

    Acquisition of territory between Garmisch and Mittenwald by the bishops of Freising and foundation of the county of Werdenfels under the rule of the imperial monastery of Freising.

  • 13th-16th century

    Partenkirchen is a trading post on one of the trade routes between Venice and Augsburg and enjoys a certain prosperity as a result. This is why it is also referred to as the “Golden Landl” at this time.

    Dissolution of the county of Werdenfels as a result of secularisation and annexation to Bavaria.

    Andreas ‘Anderl’ Ostler (* 21 January 1921 in Grainau; † 24 November 1988 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen) was a German bobsledder who, together with Lorenz Nieberl, became Germany's first Olympic champion in the two-man bobsleigh in 1952 and also won gold in the four-man bobsleigh.
